George Witt Service, Inc. - We watch out for ways to save you money on repairs.
We perform accurate testing using factory information and techniques to prove which parts fail to pass tests. After we replace the part, we repeat the tests to prove the repair. In this way, we replace the fewest parts and guarantee to fix the problem the first time. It’s our goal to fix your car right, the first time, for the least possible money. This may sound crazy to many business owners, but we’re very proud of our professionalism and attention to detail. The second most expensive repair is the one that doesn’t last and has to be done again, usually at your expense. We practice the concept of “Overall Lowest Cost” (OLC) repairs. A quality repair, using factory quality parts will last a long time, which will be the overall lowest cost repair.
You can go to many parts stores and buy a cheap alternator with a “lifetime” guarantee for far less than a hundred bucks. For that price, the vendor can only clean it and paint it, they can’t do a quality remanufacturing job. We’ve tried nearly every brand on the market and only the factory Denso brand will stand the test of time, based on our experience. If we put an alternator on your car, it’s good for a 100,000 miles or more.
Another great example is Air Conditioning service and leak repair. The industry standard is to repair the leak and add refrigerant. In some cases, no leak is found, so only refrigerant is added. However, the AC compressor is lubricated by a small amount of oil that circulates with the refrigerant. Most mechanics will not add oil when they add refrigerant. If the refrigerant leaked out, so did some oil.
A few years ago, we changed our procedure and now always add 2 ounces of premium refrigerant oil on all AC services. Our sales of AC compressors has dropped to next to nothing as a result. I realize now that most AC compressor failures aren’t really failures, they simply ran out of oil. This has cost us tens of thousands of dollars in lost compressor sales, but we’re dedicated to keeping cars reliable and preventing expensive repairs. Another expensive repair is component replacement instead of component repair. Brake calipers are a great example of this. When brake calipers stick, it causes one of the brake pads to wear excessively. Most mechanics will always recommend caliper replacement when they see uneven pad wear.
We’ve found that it isn’t the caliper that’s the problem most of the time, it’s the caliper slides binding from rust and lack of lubrication. We can clean the slides and lubricate them with a special hi-temperature synthetic brake lubricant and restore caliper operation to like-new condition for a fraction of the cost of replacement calipers. We sell very few brake calipers.
What all this means to you is that we value your money and are very careful with it. We want to make our repair jobs the best they can be for the lowest overall cost. We’re constantly evaluating what we do with OLC in mind. |
